Latvia holidays give you the opportunity to discover historic towns, ancient fortifications, endless forests, sparkling lakes and the deserted Baltic coast. Nothing beats jumping into a car and touring this gem of a country at your own pace.
Latvia definitively shook off decades of isolation as part of the Soviet Union by declaring independence in 1991 and becoming a member of the European Union in 2004. You will encounter a country and its people which embraces its new-found freedoms and exhibits a fun-loving side and a passion for the outdoors.
Be enchanted by Riga with its collection of Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings and café culture. Away from the city uncover a time of romantic legends and heroic figures with medieval castles and opulent grand residences and take a brisk stroll along the dramatic windswept coastline with its vast sandy and secluded beaches.
Take in medieval Cesis with its wooden buildings, cobbled streets and impressive castle and admire Baroque Rundale Palace, conceived by the architect who designed the Hermitage. Stay in distinguished manor houses and pamper yourself at a spa retreat in the resort of Jurmala.
For a truly unique summer break, take a beach holiday in Latvia, where you will find pleasant, warm waters and miles of sparkling sandy beaches backed by scented pine forests. Our Latvia beach holidays take you to the stunning resort of Jurmala, also known as the ‘Riviera of the Baltics’.
With plenty of fabulous shops, bustling cafés and excellent restaurants serving delicious, freshly caught seafood, you won’t struggle for things to see and do after a day in the sun. In addition, the enchanting and culturally rich city of Riga is within easy distance for a magical day trip.
Sports & nature
The treasures of Latvian nature are accessible to everyone, as the main objects of value are the property of the state. In our country, one can freely access rivers and lakes, the sea and the forests – while, of course, respecting private property and protecting the environment. Therefore, you must definitely take advantage of the opportunities that Latvia offers to the friends of nature because, in our day, an escape into nature and unhurried green recreation is an invaluable experience and memory – and in fact, even a necessity of life.
Do you wish to go on a hike? Go right ahead! There is nothing better than going for a walk in the Gauja National Park, observing the sandstone outcrops and the caves they contain! You can also visit the banks of the rapid-filled River Amata, head to the Kurzeme coast or the land of the blue lakes, Latgale – you can find hiking routes everywhere that will leave an impression. Want to go mushroom or berry picking? All Latvian forests are full of nature’s bounty! Want to see wild animals? Then you should head for the Līgatne nature park or simply go out and see them in the wild! Or maybe you are tempted by bird-watching? You are welcome to that, too: in Pape, at Lake Engure and many other locations there are special towers for bird-watchers. Would you like to explore the unique ecosystem of marshlands? Be our guest: at the Ķemeri marsh within 50 km of Riga and elsewhere there are even special nature trails.
But even that is not all - this is merely a tiny fraction of the broad possibilities available to tourists who wish to go out into nature. Everything is possible in Latvia; all you need to do is enquire and search a little more carefully. It is not in vain that the recreational opportunities offered by the Latvian state forests have been dubbed “Mammadaba” – Momma Nature. Of course, it is worth keeping in mind that recreation in nature can be enjoyed most fully by using the services of knowledgeable guides and taking care to have appropriate equipment and clothing.
Riga is definitely famous for it’s Nightlife. Riga has many Pubs, Bars, Clubs and Cafes that are generally busy from Wednesday through to Sunday. You can find many of the Pubs, Bars and Clubs listed below in Riga Old Town. Riga’s old town is quite compact so it’s easy to visit 3, 4 or even more Riga Pub, Bars and Clubs each night. This is how the locals like to party… generally Rigans don’t spend all night in one bar or club, Rigans like to move around and enjoy the different styles each Bar and club in Riga has to offer.
Culture and history info
Latvia, at the crossroads of Western and Eastern culture, as well as its chequered history, has had an imprint left on it from different cultures. This impact has given Latvia magnificent architectural monuments, as well as religious diversity, and contributed to the self-preservation of the Latvian national identity – here ancestral traditions are still held in high esteem -
Opera and theatre
Latvia boasts ancient traditions and a high level of achievement in the performing arts. Fans of classical music are treated each year to two major opera music festivals – the Riga Opera Festival and the Sigulda Opera Festival, in which not only artists from the Latvian National Opera take part, but also notable visiting artists.
In Riga, as well as the regions, are many professional theatres with brilliant actors – Dailes Theatre, The National Theatre of Latvia, Daugavpils Theatre, Liepaja Theatre, Valmiera Drama Theatre, and a Puppet Theatre.
The Latvian love for the theatre is confirmed by an active amateur theatre scene.
Folklore and ethnic traditions
There is a rich heritage of folklore in Latvia, which has been preserved to the present day. The most popular holiday is the summer solstice – the day of Līgo and Jāņi (midsummer). A bonfire is lit on almost every hill and frothy beer and Jāņi cheese take prime position on almost every table. The Latvian Song and Dance Festival is considered one of the symbols of Latvian identity, which occurs once every five years.
Latvia is not only rich in sights and attractions, it is also a place where you can take an active part in various activities like craft workshops, traditional celebrations and food preparations. So, you can take with you not only beautiful memories of your experiences in Latvia, but also perhaps a handmade clay pot or homemade bread.
Music and festivals
Music and singing is close to the heart for Latvians, and many Latvians sing in choirs and play in ensembles and orchestras. The tradition of singing is an important part of holidays. Each year, many concerts and festivals take place in Latvia. Classical music concerts take place all year round, and summer is festival season. Join the dancing crowds at events like Positivus and Summer Sound, or enjoy the relaxed atmosphere at a blues or classical music event.
